“Inspiring children to learn and value our natural world through garden-based education.”
-Living Classroom Mission Statement
Visit a LASD elementary school campus and you may witness students planting seedlings, harvesting and threshing winter wheat, experiencing the challenges of nest building, saving seeds from heirloom tomatoes, locating garden treasures on a life-sized coordinate grid, or planting a Native American "Three Sisters" garden. This is just a taste of the fun and academically rigorous lessons offered to LASD teachers and students through the Living Classroom Program.
Living Classroom utilizes school gardens and outdoor areas to provide children with engaging hands-on learning experiences. The standard-aligned lessons complement the existing curriculum and provide the opportunity for students to experience concepts taught in the classroom through exploration of the natural world. Living Classroom lessons are designed to hold student interest and improve lesson retention through hands-on experience. The lessons also promote environmental literacy and healthy eating habits.
Visit the LASD Living Classroom Website to learn more about the history of the program and the lessons your child will enjoy.
